Doctors at Kamineni Hospitals successfully conduct complex and rare ENT surgery

Hyderabad: Surgeons at Kamineni Hospitals, LB Nagar performed a complex and rare ENT surgery on a 23-year-old girl hailing from Hyderabad, who was brought to the hospital with complaints of decreased hearing. The girl had been suffering from this medical conditionfor 15 years. At that time, she had complained of severe pain in the ear. Following clinical investigations, surgeons came to the conclusion that the patient was suffering from a rare disease called ‘Congenital cholesteatoma’.

“Congenital Cholesteatoma is an abnormal skin growth that can develop in the middle ear. It generally occurs at birth or in the initial ages (5-10 years) of a child. About 2% of children suffering from Cholesteatoma get it in their initial ages. Without treatment, cholesteatoma will grow larger and cause a variety of complications. Over time, if the cholesteatoma continues to grow, it may erode the adjacent  bones inside the middle ear, the inner ear, the bones near the brain, and the nerves near the inner ear and face. The damage may result in hearing loss and dangerous brain related infections. Untreated cholesteatoma can be life threatening too in the long term.”

Dr. N Apoorva Reddy, Senior ENT Surgeon, Kamineni Hospitals – LB Nagar, Hyderabad

“After evaluation, we came to the conclusion that the patient had an extensive mass in one side of her ear, with bones adjacent to brain and important blood channels eaten up by the disease. Keeping her age in perspective, we immediately evaluated her and performed a ‘Modified radical mastoidectomy surgery’. The surgery was successful, and the patient was discharged from hospital after five days of observation,”Dr. Apoorva Reddy added.

Hearing loss is a common problem caused by noise, aging, disease, and hereditary factors. People with hearing loss may find it hard to converse with friends and family. They may also have trouble understanding a doctor’s advice, responding to warnings, and hearing doorbells and alarms. To avoid hearing problems, people should stay away from loud music, and curtail the use of earphones.
